Learning unit contents

This course aims at learning and practising the skills that will allow the students to build their methodological approach and to develop all the stages of their research in anthropology based on ethnographic examples, texts and exercises.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The students will have a broader understanding of the different stages and components of anthropological research: from adopting a reflective stance to the immersive approach, from the construction of the subject in the field to developing a research question, from ethnographic description to documented and argued writing. They will be introduced to the requirements of participant observation and various methodological tools.

Evaluation Criteria for the Intermediate Assignment:

  • State and describe an ethnographic "gaffe"
  • Analyze this "gaffe"
  • Explain the heuristic value of this "gaffe"
  • (Reflexivity, creativity/originality)
Evaluation Criteria for the Final Assignment:

  • Translating the initial question into an anthropological problem and reflection. The transition from the initial question to the anthropological question must be clearly articulated, as well as the theoretical concepts or propositions used.
  • Methodology: clarity and relevance of the presentation and references used.
  • Exploration of the problem statement.
  • Reinvestment of acquired knowledge (lectures, presentations, exercises, 3 texts from the reading portfolios of both methodology courses in anthropology taken).
  • Use of bibliographic sources on the topic (at least 2 relevant anthropological references not included in the reading portfolios + a key concept correctly defined and referenced).
