Learning unit contents

This course introduces the principles and theories of teaching/learning foreign languages ??and their methodological applications in French as a foreign language: how do you learn a foreign language, and in what progression? What distinguishes learning a foreign language from learning a first language? What to do with my learners' languages? How to react to mistakes? What tasks should be proposed to develop written and oral skills, with what tools and resources? And grammar, how to work on it from a communicative perspective?

This course aims to prepare for the profession of teacher of French as a foreign or second language, by focusing on a socio-didactic understanding of teaching situations and so-called "allophone" audiences, in their diversity (pupils from the German-speaking and Flemish communities, exchange students, pupils and adults in situations - in the plural because necessarily diverse - of forced migration, etc.).

The two learning activities "Didactics and methodology of FLES" and "Pedagogy of FLES grammar" will cover a fairly broad range of didactic questions, while dealing with them in a situated manner.

Teaching and methodology of French as a foreign and second language

  • The reference theories of FLE/S didactics,
  • The history of language teaching methods,
  • Didactic planning and scripting (practical work),
  • Evaluation and forms of feedback,
  • Managing heterogeneity (linguistic, cultural, academic) - plurilingual approaches,
  • The development of oral, written, lexical, phonetic skills, etc. (grammatical skills will be covered as part of the Grammar Pedagogy course),
  • Educational tools and resources (CECRL, positioning tests, manuals, online resources, etc.).

Teaching the grammar of French as a foreign and second language (part)

The course introduces...

  • The place of grammar within linguistics and language teaching,
  • The status of implicit grammar and explicit grammar, particularly in the context of learning according to communicative and actional approaches,
  • The question of selection, progression (spiral), assimilation (interlanguages) of grammatical content,
  • The types of activities and grammar exercises in a progressive, inductive and action-oriented logic.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Be able

  • to analyze and build their French teaching practices in light of the reference theories of FSL didactics,
  • to approach grammar notion critically, to connect it coherently with their teaching French as a foreign and second language, to prepare and create appropriate and effective lessons in specific contexts.

Teaching and methodology of French as a foreign and second language

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • distinguish theories and conditions for learning a foreign language (in relation to the first language, in particular),
  • take a critical look at the methodological options for teaching foreign languages ??and the limits of the different paradigms,
  • analyze and use resource tools for teaching/learning FSL (manuals, reference materials, etc.),
  • script a "zero" lesson in FSL,
  • define the objectives and progression of a FSL course,
  • work on oral and written skills according to the needs of the learners,
manage the linguistic and cultural diversity of the group.

Teaching the grammar of French as a foreign and second language (part)

Upon completion of the course students should be able to :

  • distinguish the linguistic, didactic and acquisitionist theories of the grammar of a foreign language
  • criticize and exploit the methodological options and the grammar reference tools available
  • elaborate lesson plan
  • create exercises and tasks to conceptualize grammatical rules from authentic documents
  • handle all macro-skills
  • choose authentic and pertinent documents
  • set up activities according to different stages
  • prepare a grammar corpus.
