Learning unit contents
This course approaches development cooperation projects from a methodological point of view.
It enables students to identify and apply the tools necessary for the design, planning, implementation and evaluation of a development project.
In doing so, the course also aims to question and distinguish the role of the scientist from that of the expert in the development cooperation sector.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify and classify the causes and consequences of a situation identified as a problem encountered by a population of development country;
- apply, in response, the tools (problem trees, solution trees, logical framework matrix) used to identify a problem, to plan and develop a project, to manage it and to evaluate it;
- highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the tools used;
- draw up a development project that meets the standards of the aid industry.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A good knowledge of the actors and issues of cooperation is necessary.
The courses (SOCI2243) "Sociologie de la Coopération Internationale" et (SOCI0088) "Initiation à la coopération internationale et l'aide humanitaire" can help in understanding the issues involved in setting up development projects.

In the first stage, students are asked to respond in groups formed by the teacher to a call for development projects from a fictitious donor.
Students must submit their project by email to the teacher within the set deadline. Any delay will result in an automatic postponement. Their project must use the tools seen in the course. It is then assessed by another group of students. Each group must both develop a project and evaluate the project of another group.
Each group has to present its project and try to convince the jury of the relevance and quality of its project.
The teacher's assessment is based on compliance with the instructions of the call for projects, the quality of the project and the good use of the tools seen in the course, as well as the relevance of the evaluation of the projects formulated by the student groups.
