Learning unit contents

This course is about operations management and supply chain management for the healthcare sector. In particular, it focusses on decision-making problems encountered in this context and on their resolution.

Addressed topics include:

  • forecasting,
  • long-term, mid-term, and short-term planning,
  • process improvement and patient flows,
  • supply chain management.
Several quantitative methods are studied, such as linear programming and queueing theory.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

After following the course, the student will be able to:

  • Define and understand the key concepts of operations management and supply chain management in the health care sector.
  • Identify and analyze typical operations management problems in healthcare organizations.
  • Identify their causes and consequences.
  • Identify the adequate tools to solve those problems.
  • Implement solutions or identify the necessary expertise, when required.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A basic knowledge of Excel is suitable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Alternating theoretical and practical content, sometimes in the same course session. Diversified course material.

  • Lectures.
  • Participative activities.
  • Solved exercises, some of them using a computer software (Excel, Anylogic).
  • Readings (scientific articles).
  • Case studies.
  • Visits and/or external speakers.
