Learning unit contents
During this course, students will either be on their own or grouped in 2 or 3 randomly depending on the number of people enrolled in the course and each small group will be freely invited to choose an article published during the last three years in major epidemiology or health economics journals. The choice will be primarily based on a pedagogical objective and must be validated by the course instructor. After validation, each group (or the individual student) will have to make a presentation of 15 minutes maximum to the whole class. This presentation will be structured according to the article but will also have to include a short introduction on the theme. For each group presenting an article, one group will be chosen (in advance) as chair-wo-men. Each chair-wo-men will be required to ask a relevant question to the presenters of the article, which they will be asked to answer. The whole class will also be encouraged to ask a question.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The objective of this course is multiple. First of all, students will have to read and understand a scientific paper, but also present it in a simple and educational way. It is not always easy to ask a question when attending a congress or conference. It is also sometimes difficult to answer the questions asked. The aim of adding flesh-wo-men will be to make the Q&A part dynamic, but also to "force" students to ask - and answer - a question. A short questionnaire on the presentations will be given to the whole class at the end of each session. This is also intended to stimulate the listening of the whole class. Secondly, the students preparing (and chairing) the paper will most likely be asked to go beyond the paper itself and contextualise it within the broader framework of epidemiology or health economics, and the students in the class will be provided with good information on recent developments in epidemiology and health economics and the work of public health scientists in this field. Finally, the speakers will be expected to make a PowerPoint presentation that is consistent with what is expected at a congress or conference.
