Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
This course provides the necessary fundamentals for data collection in the environment, so as to be able to build an instrumentation plan.
The concepts of metrology, error calculations and sampling are addressed through different practical cases (water, soil, air, fauna, flora,..).
Section 1: Sampling in the environment
- Sampling question
- Theoretical fundamentals: statistical elements, different sampling plans, sampling error, replicats, etc. Sampling vocabulary
- Declination of sampling projects in space and time
- Metrological parameters
- Measurement uncertainties
- Definition of the problem and objectives
- Choice of variables to measure
- Choice of measurement methods and instruments
Section 4: Environmental Indicators
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
be able to:
- design a methodology for environmental sampling and measurement
- understand and interpret metrological terms (e.g. LOD, systematic error, accuracy, linearity)
- interpret data representations
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
fundamental of statistics
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
lectures and exercises
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
face to face
Recommended or required readings
Course notes on e-campus
Recommended: reference books on error calculation, metrology (references given in the course)
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
oral exam
Written work / report
Additional information:
Methodology :
Written report on a case study of the student's choice. The student must complete a justified instrumentation and sampling plan.
Maximum 15 pages
Indicators :
Oral presentation of a work on environmental indicators of the student's choice
ppt to be returned
15 min presentation and 20 min questions
in the presence of all students
The instructions and evaluation criteria are detailed during the 1st course and are written in the introductory ppt of the course (on e-campus).
The final score is the weighted average (based on course hours): 1/5 for indicators and 4/5 for Methodology
If the EU is failing (<10), only the failed party should be represented: either methodical or indicators.
During the oral exam, exits are not allowed before an exam duration of 02 hours.
The exam room will no longer be accessible to students beyond exam time (to the minute!)
