The aim of the course is to describe from a general point of view the Belgian judicial system. It constitutes a prerequisite for the course of procedural law, which is to be studied thereafter by Law students.

Following the examination of the fundamental features of the judiciary, its organisation and an elementary approach to the composition and competences of its jurisdictions, this course is dedicated to the study of the status of magistrates, referendaries, prosecutors, bailiffs and lawyers.

Teaching is ex cathedra, except for practical exercises, during which students are expected to take an active role.

Lectures and tutorials take place during the first quarter of the year. Some important chapters of the course may be reviewed by experienced students.
As the course is aimed at an audience of mainly first-time undergraduates, the sessions will be recorded by podcast. It is up to the students to make appropriate use of it.

Articles of the code may be underlined but not annotated. The Judicial Code may not be filled in with post-it notes.

Additional information:
Assessment in January will be by a written exam. This examination will include multiple choice and true/false questions, questions on the understanding of the subject matter, a practical exercise and a reflective question based on a topical issue.
During the May-June session, which is open to first-time students, assessment will be by oral examination. The attention of students is now drawn to the fact that failure to comply with the terms of registration and attendance at the allocated times and dates will be sanctioned by an absence or serious deficiency, according to the institutional regulations applicable at that time.
In August-September, a written examination will be held in the same way as in January.
The examination will be based on the subject matter set out in the book Institutions judiciaires, published by Editions Larcier, as well as on the developments of the oral course. It aims to verify both knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.
Students are required to have an up-to-date judicial code at the time of the examination, the articles of which may only be underlined. Post-it notes or other additions are not permitted.
Students are required to demonstrate their knowledge and their understanding of matters exposed in the book and additional documentation, and during the lectures as well.
