Learning unit contents

The course deepens the biostatistics notions. It is focused on hyptheses tests (means comparisons, followed by analyses of variance, regression and correlation analyses). The last section of the course discusses non parametric tests to be used in situations of non-normality.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The main objectives of the course are:


  • to make the students familiar to the use of computers softwares.
  • to explain the statistical reasoning.
  • to introduce the notion of statistical hypothesis testing, and to provide numerous examples in biology.
  • to list a series of useful techniques, especially the ones mainly used in experiments likely to be made by veterinarians.
  • to allow the students to use the theory on practical examples extracted from the veterinary life.
  • to open the view of the students for the situations not covered in the course.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basics in mathematics and statistics (the requested level is the level of VETE0432-4 course)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

  • 22 hours of lectures (11*2 hours)
  • 10 hours of computer sessions on biostatistics (7*2 hours) using excel and R
  • 6 hours of problems solving sessions (3*2 hours).

Additional information:

2 hours lectures are given, usually twice every week (see the schedule for more details). The course will be given during the first quadrimester. Podcasts will be created when possible and made available to the students.

Practical sessions will be planned on a 2 hours by session basis. The schedule will be distributed to the students during the first quadrimester.

The evaluations take place in January and, if needed, in September.

The final grade is a mean over:




  • an evaluation of the biostatistics skills based on computerized MCQ (stat exam)
  • an evaluation of computer applied to biostatistics skills based on a problem solving approach using statistical software (excel, R) (hands-on exam).
The final grade is obtained as a weighted average of the two parts, with weights equal to 2/3 and 1/3 for the stat exam and the hands-on exam, respectively. If the final grade in January is < 10/20, partial grades can be conserved if the partial grade is at least 12/20. If the partial grade is 10 or 11, it can be conserved for the September session.
