Systems pathology is the discipline that focuses on characterizing the morphological and functional alterations typical of the pathological processes affecting each major system in different species. Specific learning objectives are detailed below in knowledge, skills and attitudes.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Knowledge: the transmission of knowledge is limited, in the second cycle, to the common pathological processes encountered in general practice, both to identify a dysfunction, make a macroscopic diagnosis or circumscribe a strategy of complementary post-mortem examinations and to correctly interpret the result of an autopsy, histo-, cyto- or haematological examination that has been subcontracted. The pathological entities with value as an anatomical and physiopathological model are more particularly developed. This knowledge is an essential prerequisite for the clinical disciplines and inspection of foodstuffs of animal origin. This knowledge also aims to enable the graduate to be competitively involved in a training process through research in the field of diseases in general. Know-how : Knowing how to generate a differential diagnosis based on the morphological and functional alterations of each major system; knowing how to use precise and rigorous terminology to describe and name lesions; knowing how to discern the interest of a necropsy examination, either for the animal owner, or for public health, or for self-training purposes; knowing how to apply regulatory measures and hygiene and safety precautions prior to carrying out an autopsy and sending biological samples; know how to perform an autopsy from the reception of the case (if necessary after having informed the owner of the animal of the expected benefits and possible limits of the examination) to the establishment of the necropsy diagnosis; know how to write a precise and rigorous report to sanction an autopsy; know how to design a tactic of complementary post-mortem examinations aimed at identifying the cause of a pathological process while respecting the obligation of means; know how to establish the indication for a histological sample in a surgical situation (biopsy, excision); know how to carry out, package and transport preoperative or post-mortem samples in such a way as to minimise the artefactual modifications likely to alter or prevent the diagnosis; know how to interpret the results of complementary examinations, whether histopathological, microbiological, parasitological or toxicological; knowing how to seek relevant information to interpret a macroscopic lesion observed personally, an autopsy report or a histo-, cyto- or haematological examination report; knowing how to understand a scientific article and follow a conference intended for an audience of clinicians and general practitioners, in particular by understanding the commented hotos of lesions, both macroscopic and microscopic; knowing how to be informed on a daily basis of world news in the field of animal diseases, both domestic and wild. Knowing how to behave: knowing how to be permanently informed of the evolution of knowledge in animal pathology; knowing how to respect an ethical attitude when one is led to carry out an autopsy on an animal which has been previously followed by a colleague; knowing how to delegate an autopsy to a better qualified person; knowing how to recognise the failure of diagnostic procedures; knowing how to dissociate factual data from their interpretation; knowing how to be cautious when writing the conclusions of a report.

Additional information:

During the year, in the autopsy room: formative evaluations relating to the lesion diagnosis, differential diagnosis and the taking, conditioning and routing of samples, via a public interview and the writing of an autopsy report. At the end of the year: certification assessment with two separate tests to be held on the same day. The first will consist of an oral theoretical examination, in-person and without preparation lasting approximately 20 minutes and will cover three questions drawn at random in accordance with the procedures defined online. The second will consist of the histopathological diagnosis of five slides selected at random from all the slides submitted during the year (n=4) and from a series of "mystery" slides (n=1). Thirty minutes of preparation will be planned before an oral evaluation of the diagnoses by a college of examiners composed of the staff members who will have delivered the practical work.

Organizational remarks

The practical work consists of 13 sessions spread over 13 weeks. The first 9 sessions each deal with a different theme; the last 4 sessions are dedicated to revisions and, if necessary, remedial sessions for students who have missed one or other of the first 9 sessions for medical reasons duly attested by a certificate deposited at the students' secretariat no later than one week after the first day of absence. The agenda of the sessions and the theme of each one are available online (eCampus). Each session lasts 2 hours and includes a presentation of the theme and slides by the staff, a question/answer type interaction and a time interval dedicated to the individual supervised reading of histological slides dedicated to the treated theme. Access to the first 9 sessions is subject to the successful completion of an online test designed to confirm the mastery of the prerequisites. Passing this test requires a mark of 80/100 or higher. Each student may take each test several times until he/she obtains the grade required for admission to the session in question. The pre-requisite test form will be renewed in 2021, please keep informed on eCampus. In addition, each student will be required to prove his or her presence and participation in each of the 9 specifically dedicated sessions by signing the appropriate registers. A student who has been absent from one of the first 9 sessions for medical reasons, duly attested by a certificate deposited at the student secretary's office no later than one week after the first day of absence, will be authorized to submit a request for remedial action to the staff concerned. Catch-up sessions for those absent for medical reasons will be organised during the last four weeks of the practical work. As clearly stated in the university regulations, attendance at the practical exercises is compulsory. Consequently, absences not justified in the histopathology practical work by a medical certificate submitted to the students' secretariat no later than one week after the first day of absence and absences duly justified by a medical certificate submitted within the required time limit but not compensated by a remedial session will automatically be sanctioned by exclusion from the first session for the subject concerned, as provided for in the above-mentioned regulations.
