Learning unit contents

BSc course: Essential genomics for veterinarians and the animal sciences.

"Essential genomics for veterinarians and the animal sciences" provides a general introduction to the field of genomics applied to domestic animals.

The course comprises a total of eight sections corresponding respectively to

Prerequisites I: Fundamentals in molecular biology of the gene

Prerequisites II: Fundamentals in genetics

Chapter I: Reference genomes

Chapter II: Individual genomes

Chapter III: Individual phenomes

Chapter IV: Genetic dissection of the functional circuitry

Chapter V: Fundamentals of animal selection

Chapter VI: Applied animal genomics

The first 4 ½ sections will be given to the veterinary students in their second bachelor's year.

The remaining 3 ½ sections will be given to the veterinary students in their first master's year.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the student will be familiarized with:

  • Basic concepts in quantitative genomics including the distinction between mono-, oligo- and polygenic traits, the molecular basis of dominance and recessivity, the different types of epistatic interactions.
  • Objectives of Mordern Genomics. The student will understand the different strategies (forward, reverse) allowing the identification of causal variants.
  • The principles of selective breeding by being able to explain the objectives of selection, how to collect informations, the ranking and how to evaluate the selection response.
  • Applications of genomic selection such as parentage identification, management of monogenetic and polygenic diseases.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

1.Knowledge in genetics (characteristics of the animal genome, main sequencing methods, linkage disequilibrium).

2. Basic knowledge in probability and statistics (mean, variance, covariance, correlation).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course comprises 22 hours of "ex cathedra" courses and 5 hours of practicals.
The organization of the practicals will take place in a hybrid way: online and face-to-face.
Attendance at particals is mandatory.
An unjustified absence from the practicals will not allow the student to take the exam in the first session.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Course materials and recommended or required readings

The subject matter of the course corresponds to the content of the textbook "Essential Genomics for Veterinarians and the Aanimal Sciences" that can be downloaded from GIGAUAG - Teaching.

As additional support, the students will have access (through the same web-pages) to copies of the slides that are used by the teacher during the ex-cathedra courses.  These slides correspond to a large extent to the figures and tables of the textbook.  Slides will be made as the course progresses.  Updates of the lecture notes will be made available as the course progresses.

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person
