Personal research

The TFE of the Specialized Master in Risk and Disaster Management in the Anthropocene Era constitutes a work of scientific, personal and original research. The subject of the thesis is co-constructed by the student and the promoters of the training. The subject is stopped during the first quadrimester. The promoter is a doctor, member of the academic or scientific staff. If he is not a member of ULiège, a co-promoter, member of ULiège, is added to him. In the general case, the thesis tries to answer a scientific question, by verifying the validity of a hypothesis (proposed solution to the question) according to a hypothetico-deductive method. The coherence and the originality of the hypothesis are recognized by a careful study of the state of the art. The experimental approach used involves both the acquisition and the processing of the data required to argue the proposed solution. Other approaches than the one presented above (research-development, deductive and formal approach by modelling, research-action, etc.) can also be proposed.

Interdisciplinary expertise

The field is carried out by groups of students of various origins whose training and previous professional experiences are varied to address the same problem with different approaches. This requires the mobilization of soft skills and constitutes a practice of interdisciplinarity in real situations. Thus, alongside personal research work, collective work, which will emerge from observations and discussions between students in the field, will highlight the students' abilities to practice interdisciplinarity. For the evaluation, an "expertise" type report will be added in an interdisciplinary approach because the management of risks and disasters can only be done in good collective intelligence.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Personal research

Carry out comprehensive scientific research on an individual basis. Formulate a research question and hypothesis in light of the state of knowledge in the field. Collect, qualify and process information in a rigorous, reflective and critical manner. Present in written and oral form, the process of personal scientific research, from the development of the hypothesis to the conclusion, within the limits of pages (from 25 to 40 pages, i.e. a publishable format) and time (12 minutes) allowed by the exercise. Know how to defend your approach and your research conclusions, in front of a jury of research professionals.

Interdisciplinary expertise

In a very practical way, this group report will present: · a holistic and systemic view of the problem studied while being able to project themselves into a future whose major trends are relatively well assessed; · a review of what being together on the same ground has brought; · and a reflective look at this practice of interdisciplinarity in real situations.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Personal research

During the first semester, students will have to prepare and present their duly argued research proposal. The monitoring of the dissertation is ensured by the promoter during regular meetings with the student. The student is invited to plan these meetings according to the state of progress of his TFE, and to consult the members of the scientific and academic staff of ULiège if necessary.

Additional information:

The theses juries are formed by the Faculty Council on the proposal of the Study Council for the Specialized Master in Risk and Disaster Management in the Anthropocene Era endorsed by the President of the Jury, by the end of the month of April of the year of the Specialized Master. The juries are made up of at least three readers, including the promoter, doctors and members of the academic or scientific staff of a university or research center, or deemed equivalent. The thesis can only be submitted for evaluation with the agreement of the promoter. Both content and form (written and oral) are assessed. Particular attention is given to originality. The jury makes use of the "anti-plagiarism" tools made available to it by the University authorities, plagiarism constituting a reason for the non-admissibility of the dissertation. Examples of evaluation criteria: compliance with section and option orientations, scientific quality, technical quality, innovation and originality, quality of the state of the art and references, written presentation (outline, style), quality of the oral presentation and its support, quality of the answers to the oral questions, overall judgement.

Interdisciplinary expertise
