Learning unit contents

[UPDATED IN 2022] Students enrolled in Block 1 of M-BBMC and BIM must complete 8 weeks of integrated practicals (or internships) for a total of 12 credits. In practice, two internships of 4 weeks each must be carried out in the laboratories of the Department of Life Sciences. These laboratories belong to three research entities (InBioS-PhytoSYSTEMS, InBioS-CIP, GIGA). Each student must do an internship in two different entities and each internship must be carried out under the supervision of a promoter belonging to the teaching staff of the Department (Internship supervisor). Day-to-day supervision can be delagated to non-teaching staff (e.g., PhD students).

The subjects of the internships are proposed by the teachers via the intranet of the Department, and the proposals are gathered in a file which will be made accessible to the students. Student's preferences (3 proposals per quadrimester, hence 6 proposals) must be sent to the internship coordinator (Prof. Denis Baurain) for the 21st of October. Internships will then be attributed following an algorithm that maximizes everyone's wishes.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The objective of the internships is to allow students to work in research laboratories and to confront them to experimental realities under the guidance of a supervisor.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Students are only allowed to carry out their internships if they complete at least 15 credits of the compulsory courses of Block 1, or if they have acquired them beforehand.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Internships are not mini-Master's theses and their scientific ambition may be limited.

Internships must be carried out in the laboratories of the Department.

Each internship resorts to a specific scientific theme of the host laboratory and therefore to a specific bibliographic framework.

Additional information:

Each internship is the subject of a written report and a presentation/oral defense.

Internship reports should be typeset, clear and concise and should not exceed 10 pages (1.5 line spacing, at least 11 in character size), excluding the bibliography limited to 20 references. Some appendices can be associated with the reports, such as sequences or sequence alignments (DNA, proteins), vector/promoter schemes, as well as large figures illustrating certain results, etc. The reports must contain an introduction/purpose of the work, materials and methods, results/discussion and a bibliography allowing to find the cited references (full references with titles of cited articles). The reports will be sent to the internship coordinator 15 days after the end of internship at the latest. The absence of a written report or oral presentation leads to a score of 0/20 for the internship concerned and a failure score (max 7/20) for the internship course (SSTG0009-1) as a whole.

The work done during each internship is presented orally in 10 minutes, followed by a 10-minute general discussion within the entities (InBioS-PhytoSYSTEMS, InBioS-CIP, GIGA-R). This presentation must be made no later than the last day of the internship.

By stage, only one note is given. TIthis is divided into two notes from the supervisor for the work done in the laboratory (10/20) and for the written report (5/20) and a note given by the teachers present during the presentation and oral discussion (5/20).

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The internships take place in the first and second quadrimestres. They are organized only once per academic year and are not the subject of a second session.
