Learning unit contents

The Sociology of Work course aims to train students in the sociological analysis of work activities and situations and professional relations

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will be able to :

  • Identify the controversies in the literature
  • Understand the concepts, methodological principles and the many facets of research.
  • Apply these concepts and principles to the analysis of empirical cases
  • Establish links between different theoretical, methodological and empirical elements
  • Criticise or evaluate certain theoretical and/or normative positions
  • Produce a tightly worked argument on a theoretical question

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

It is highly recommended that students have followed an earlier course on introduction to sociology. If this is not the case, the student should attempt to catch up by reading a sociology manual, such as Orianne J.-F. (2019), Petit précis de théorie sociologique, De Boeck Supérieur, Paris/Bruxelles.

The course is organised around the presentation and discussion of several themes central to the sociology of work: qualification, identities, collective negotiation, professional training, and intermediairies of the labour market, professional groups. The objective here is to discover the principal concepts and paradigms of the sociology of work based on the concrete problems that drive them (division, integration, regulation, etc.)
