Learning unit contents
This course is organized around several thematics and aims to give to students a better understanding about the concept of « gender » and its implications in the analysis of the society.
This course is based on anthropological and sociological approaches. The first objective is to question the social construction of gender relations and the relevance of concepts and tools related to this sort of analysis. The second objective of this course is to think about the very importance of the analysis of gender relations in development policies, programs and projects. Furthermore, this approach will give us the opportunity to think critically about development practices.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- To understand the concept of gender and the implications of gender relations on the social organization.
- To give a reflection about the importance of gender analysis in development policies, programs and projects.
- To develop a critical perspective about concepts and their uses.
- To develop a specific expertise on one thematic, approach with a gender analysis.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A good knowledge of English. Students must be able to read and understand English articles.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This course will be in seminar form. There will be teacher's presentations, texts' discussions, and oral presentations by students (during the last course).
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
There will be 5 courses of 3 hours. This course is in seminar form so the presence of student is highly recommended.
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Students will receive a bibliography and a collection of readings, including articles and book chapters from authors studied in the course.
The diaporama of teacher's presentation will be available after each course.
- Active participation on discussions in class (including reading some articles and be able to discuss them): 20%
- Presentation of an article for the discussion: 30%
- Oral presentation on a thematic (including written paper): 50%
