Learning unit contents
Physics for first-year university students in life sciences : electromagnetism, quantum physics and nuclear physics. Some concepts are illustrated by applications to life sciences.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, the student will be capable of:
- mastering units of measurement and in particular the International System (SI)
- solving problems of intermediate level in electromagnetism, of basic level in quantum and nuclear physics
- an approach to scientific reasoning
- realizing and exploiting simple measurements in a laboratory.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Basic mathematics (algebra, analyse, elements of geometry and trigonometry) are also needed.
A few concepts studied in the courses Physics I and Physics II are used and are presumed to be known (there will be no refresher)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This learning unit makes use of different learning and teaching activities such as face-to-face, as well as practical works where students are taught how to solve exercices and the use of experimental apparatus. Active participation of the students is expected when solving exercices and during the practical works. During the course certain experiments are performed live and video demonstrations are shown. Both are an integral part of the course contents.
Full group courses will initiate students to different types of problems and exercicse resolution. It is then expected that each student prepares the exercises and practical labs individually BEFORE their group's practical session. During the sessions the teaching assistants will only answer specific questions based on the preparatory work demonstrated by the student. It will also be possible to take specific appointments for more in depth remediation.
Effective presence at the practical labs and exercise sessions is mandatory and will be checked.

The first part of the theoretical course (Electromagnetism, chapters 1 to 5) is delivered ex cathedra with active participation of the students for the solving of exercices.
The second part of the theoretical course (chapters 6 to 10) is delivered ex cathedra (or can be followed on-line) with active participation of the students for the solving of exercices.
Much more active participation of the students is expected for the practical work (problem sets and labs).

The goal of this course is two-fold: on one hand an introduction to the fields of Physics described above, and to some of their applications to life sciences, and, on the other hand, to learn the process of scientific reasoning. The students' evaluation will follow both of these objectives.
The exam contains a single set of 20 multiple choice questions covering all aspects of the course (restitution, reflection, development and manipulations)
The examination is organized only once per session. The agenda is defined by the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and is immovable, no modification is possible.

A certificate for medical or other exceptional circumstances (a letter from your parents is not appropriate) can lead to a grade of "excused" (E). The certificate is to be sent directly to the professors of the teaching unit or to the Faculty secretariat ("apparitorat") and within the deadline fixed by the Faculty. Your first and last name, and dates of absence must be clearly legible in printed type.
