Teaching in the first semester, review in January

Schedule

Schedule online

Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Advanced courses in medical physics.

In-depth course detailing the concepts involved in radiotherapy treatment planning.

This includes:

- the description of the theoretical aspects as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the main dose calculation algorithms used to perform the dosimetry of patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment.

- the definition of target volumes (GTV, CTV, and PTV) as well as an in-depth teaching of the calculation of safety margins (more precisely of the PTV)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

See the individual components.

Provide theoretical training for the medical radiophysicist in the field of radiotherapy treatment planning.

At the end of this teaching, the student will be able to

- critically analyze dose distributions calculated as a function of the location in the patient and the algorithm used

- accurately calculate PTV margins

- adequately position the role of the physicist in the treatment planning process

See french version

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

See the individual components.

Course "PHYS0952: Basic physics problems related to medical radiodiagnostics, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine - dosimetry part" of the Bloc 1 master in physics or equivalent course

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

See the individual components.

Theoretical course illustrated with practical examples.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Blended learning

Additional information:

See the individual components.

Ex-cathedra and participatory face-to-face courses. An offer of online courses will be planned.

However, it is important that the people participating in the course are physically present for the practical exercises. This will be clarified by the teacher during the first lesson

Course materials and recommended or required readings

See the individual components.

Depending on the lecturer and subject, slides or course notes are downloadable or distributed to students.

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

oral exam

Additional information:

The final grade is the average of the grades of each component.

Closed notebook oral exam with open notebook preparation.

Additional explanations: The course is the subject of an oral examination with a written part. This exam determines the final score.

If this is impossible due to the health situation, the examination will only be oral (with preparation) and will be done by videoconference.

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Q1 - The courses are given on the Woluwe site of UCLouvain as well as on the Gasthuisberg site of KU Leuven.

Exam in January

Please note: all courses are given exclusively in English

Course notes are provided via the digital platforms used by UCLouvain (Microsoft Teams and / or Moodle)
