The seminar is only organized on even years.
It aims at investigating epistemological issues related to scientific practice in either natural sciences or human sciences.
In 2024-2025, the topic of the seminar will be "Truth in science" :
Sep 23 : Introduction
Oct. 7-14 (2 sessions) : Tarskian theory of truth, Correspondence theory of trurh, Truthmakers
Oct. 21 : Coherence theory of truth
Nov. 4 : Pragmatist theory of truth
Nov. 18 : Truth in mathematics (with Yacin Hamami)
Nov. 25 - Dec. 2 (+ Dec. 9 ?) (2-3 sessions) : Truth and constructivism : Felicity conditions, veridiction and existence modes
Dec. 9 (?) - 16 : Oral presentations of students doing research work
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Students should be able to identify and clarify major epistemological issues
Students should be able to link epistemological investigation with specific scientific problems.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
First degree philosophical or scientific training.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Seminar is organized on Mondays from 3 to 6pm during the first term.
Each session is prepared by one or two students.
Students are requested to attend every sesion of the seminar. Active participation to the discussion makes part of what is assessed.
First session of the seminar should be held on Monday the 23rd of September from 3pm to 4:30pm. Then there will be two weeks for readings and the seminar will really start on October 2.

Additional information:
Students are expected to attend the seminar. Active participation to the discussion (including the presentation of assigned readings amounts to 25% of the final assesment mark.
On top of that, students have to write a short paper offering a personal summary note on the questions and issues raised in the seminar (2 pages) and then developing some specific point (different from the one the student already dealt with in their assigned readings) (4 pages) .
This paper should be handed in at the end of the january exam session.
