Learning unit contents

The proofs of the existence of God

The aim of this course is to study some of the main proofs of the existence of God produced by medieval philosophers. We will examine the motivations behind this approach (why prove the existence of God?) and on the multiple paths taken by theologians, which were in turn put forward and rejected. We will focus in particular on three authors: Anselm, Averroes and Thomas Aquinas.

Develop philosophical knowledge of the Middle Ages and methods of analysis and explanation of texts.
