The World as Will and Representation: a reading.
This course will offer a study of the first two books of Arthur Schopenhauer's The World as Will and Representation. The aim is to provide an introduction to the thought of this author, who is essential to the transition from modern to contemporary philosophy, but little studied for his own sake. We will particular attention to the transformation he proposes of Kant's critical philosophy. By successively studying two major notions, representation (Book I) and will (Book II), we will address various aspects of Schopenhauerian thought, from the theory of knowledge to psychology, aesthetics and metaphysics.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Interpretation of the Cartesian metaphysics and of the Kantian philosophy considered inf the light of the main problems arising within Modern philosophy.
Genesis of the structure of the philosophical subject from Descartes to Kant.
Learning of the techniques required for the critical explanation of texts.

To have followed or to follow the course "Histoire de la philosophie des Temps modernes"
