Learning unit contents

Integrated practical work

The integrated practical work includes 5 pharmaceutical fields: analytical pharmaceutical chemistry, analytical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical technology. During this integrated practical work, the students will synthesize a chiral active compound and characterize it (particles size, nuclear magnetic resonance, enantiomeric purity using capillary electrophoresis). They will also produce pharmaceutical dosage forms containing synthetic or natural active substances (paracetamol tablets, capsules of passionflower herb dry extract). These pharmaceutical dosage forms will then be characterized using pharmaceutical technical procedures (friability, disintegration, resistance to crushing, dissolution test ...) as well as different analytical methods in order to determine their qualitative and quantitative content (TLC, HPLC, GC, Raman and near-infrared spectroscopy).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Integrated practical work

· To offer the students a global view of a drug, from raw materials to finished products;
· To increase students awareness of their future responsibilities as health professionals on the quality of the drugs they will dispense.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Integrated practical work

Drug Analysis (PHAR0344-3)

Introduction to pharmaceutical analytical chemistry and pharmaceutical analytical chemistry (CHIM0320-3 and CHIM0330-3)

Medicinal chemistry (CHIM0332-2 and CHIM0333-2)

Pharmacognosy (PHAR0331-3 and PHAR0332-2)

Pharmaceutical technology and biopharmacy (PHAR0343-3)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Integrated practical work

The integrated practical work will be organized on 6 consecutive days.
Attendance during practical work is mandatory. In case of justified non-attendance leading to an attendance rate below 90%, the teachers reserve the right to take any action they judge necessary in order to allow the students to catch up the session(s).

Integrated practical work

Written work / report

Further information:

First session

Each part will give rise to a report, which will compile not only the obtained results but also answers to thought questions regarding the handling procedures and the used techniques.

Second session

Depending on the modules, either the students will receive raw experimental data on the basis of which they will write a report compiling data handling and the answers to thought questions, or they will carry out the module again (experimental work and report).
