Learning unit contents
Whether taken as part of the long CAPAES training program (http://www.capaes.ulg.ac.be) or of Formasup (http://www.formasup.ulg.ac.be), the PESU0016 course is designed as an effort to engage in critical reflection on the teaching practices of the participating teachers in one of their courses. Presentations, activities, resources, discussions, and individualized support for remote participants provide the tools for this reflective process.
This effort to "reflect on one's practice" unfolds across various themes explored during the sessions: objectives, methods, assessments, approaches to learning, motivational strategies, individual student characteristics, stages of professional development, feedback, classroom climate, educational technology, and more.
This multidimensional reflection is concretely expressed in the creation or revision of the syllabus for the course chosen as the 'project course' by the teacher. This process involves identifying the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and constraints within the context of the selected course, with a view toward concrete course transformation. The drafting of the syllabus includes regular exercises and is partially subjected to collective formative feedback before being formally assessed.
The reflective effort made in the PESU0016 course supports the work required for the professional didactics course (for teachers enrolled in CAPAES) and paves the way for the pedagogical regulation addressed in the PESU0017 course (for teachers enrolled in Formasup).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Formasup aims to develop five pedagogical competencies (CREER model) in connection with the teaching context of each participating teacher. These competencies are:
- Designing coherent, adapted, and learning-facilitating courses;
- Implementing the designed course by equipping one's practice with appropriate resources, technologies, and tools;
- Teaching in a way that supports students' motivation and engagement in their learning;
- Assessing student learning and providing feedback;
- Regulating the quality of one's teaching through a documented reflective practice.
By the end of the PESU0016 course, you will be able to:
- Master basic vocabulary and conceptual tools in pedagogy (knowledge);
- Apply this theoretical knowledge to describe your current teaching practice and identify areas for improvement (skills);
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Focused on clarifying your current teaching practices, the PESU0016 course logically requires that you be actively engaged in a teaching activity at the time you are taking the course.
Additionally, you must have a reliable, high-speed Internet connection, especially if you are participating in the course remotely.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Over the weeks, you will deepen your understanding of the essential parameters of teaching through various activities described below:
- Through presentations, discussions, sharing of experiences, and practical exercises, you will become familiar with the proposed theoretical frameworks.
- You will regularly complete individual assignments for which you will receive collective feedback from the instructors. This feedback will allow you to improve your work if necessary. The individual assignments to be completed are explained during face-to-face sessions (or during individualized support sessions for remote participants).
The course sessions are prepared with a focus on pedagogical isomorphism, meaning they strive to adopt certain practices they recommend to participants.
(If you are taking this course as an educational advisor, the activities and readings offered will differ somewhat from those described in this syllabus. The professional practices addressed in this course will be discussed according to your personal context.)
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Blended learning
Further information:
The course is offered either face-to-face (for teachers enrolled in CAPAES and for those enrolled in the face-to-face version of Formasup) or remotely (for teachers enrolled in the online version of Formasup).
Recommended or required readings
Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus
- Microsoft Teams
Further information:
The course has an online space hosted on the eCampus platform. This space includes all the resources needed to follow the course, including the schedule for face-to-face sessions and the deadline for submitting the final assignment.
Individualized support sessions for remote participants are conducted via Teams.
Assessment methods and criteria
Written work / report
Further information:
The assessment consists of drafting and justifying the teaching commitment for a course you are responsible for and on which you have chosen to focus your framing and analysis efforts. To do this, you will use a provided template and demonstrate that you have benefited from the theoretical references and learning activities, specifically regarding a) the identification and formulation of learning objectives, b) the choice of teaching and learning methods, c) the development of assessment strategies, and d) the pedagogical alignment of these three components within your course.
If you are enrolled in Formasup, the drafting of your course syllabus accounts for 25 points (out of a total of 100) in the final grade for the entire program. The minimum passing grade for this assessment is 10/20.
If you are enrolled in CAPAES, you will receive a pass/fail evaluation rather than a numerical grade.
The PESU0016 course assessment is conducted during the January session. You must submit your syllabus via the eCampus platform by the date provided to you.
Work placement(s)
The course does not include a formal internship. However, the regular exercises of transferring your training knowledge to your actual teaching practice (limited here to one of the courses you are responsible for) can be considered a specific form of internship within your own classroom and with your students.
