Learning unit contents
Evaluating learning is an essential component of the teaching and training expertise. It's closely linked to the way training is globally designed.
Nowadays, deep changes generate a transformation of both thinking and practices in evaluation, in particular in the sector of adult training. For instance, the development of competence-based evaluation arises numerous questions around evaluation.
This course will be an opportunity to discuss questions connected to this evolution. It will also ask the students to analyse learning assessment settings and propose improvements.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course will contribute to the development of the first competence of the grid used in the Master in Educational Sciences at FPLSE, slightly modified (by the lecturer) as follows :
"To analyse education and training situations :
- referring to conceptual frameworks from the interdisciplinary field of the educational sciences (models, existing litterature) ;
- taking into account the contexts and different actors of those situations (age, life and training contexts, functionning of the systems, meaning for each of the actors) ;
- distinguishing between description, interpretation and prescription."
Concretely, by the end of the course, the students will have :
- Analyzed an evaluation situation in its training context, using proposed tools;
- Identified and differentiated the assessed learning outcomes (especially knowledge, skills, professional attitudes and competence);
- Designed and written down improvements to a contextualized evaluation, documenting and justifying the rationale of those improvements.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course consists in a series of face-to-face sessions where resources and framework for analysis are presented. Some of them might be complemented with testimonies from trainers or researchers who present an evaluation practice and offer it to the collective analysis.
In parallel, in groups, the students identify a training situation where the question of the evaluation is raised. Therefore, they contact a teacher or a trainer interested to question his/her situation of evaluation.
The groups design, formalize and propose evaluation/assessment methods that would improve the chosen situation and justify their choices using the resources provided during the course as well as personnal ones.
The groups also provide a feedback of their work to the trainer(s) they collaborated with, and discuss their proposals with him/her.
The groups finally evaluate the implemented approach and write a group report. They also produce a mini-video in which they underline some pointing elements they've brought to the evaluation situation through their analysis.
Six or seven sessions are face-to-face, and mandatory. In addition to those sessions, the group work is organized following the groups' preferences. Would the health situation require it, some face-to-face sessions could be replaced by online sessions, but still synchronous so as to allow exchanges.

Course materials and recommended or required readings
The course space (on eCampus) will include reference models as well as some of the PowerPoint presentations and other resources used during the course sessions.

Participation in the training activities (seminars as well as group work) is mandatory in order to access evaluation for this course.
For the first session, a mini-video (instructions communicated during the course) is produced by each group and delivered in December. A report is then submitted at the beginning of the January session.
This report (only one report per group) includes a part common to the members of the group (weighting 40% of the report score) and an individual analysis (weighting 60% of the report score).
For each student, the release of these notes is conditional on sending the mini-video made by his/her group in December.
For students who have failed (in group) in the first session (January), a second session (September) will require individual modification of certain parts of the group report.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
The course sessions are held on Mondays from 1PM to 4PM. The exact dates of the face-to-face sessions will be communicated during the first course and displayed on the online course space.
