Learning unit contents

This course will address:

1) the cellular and molecular neurobiology of various pathologies of the central and peripheral nervous system.

Topics:
- Spinal cord injuries
- Neurodegeneration (Parkinson, Alzheimer)
- Brain tumors
- Cortical malformations
- Epilepsy
- Multiple sclerosis
- Depression
- Auditive disorders
- Addictions
- Stroke  

2) Students will also learn about neuroimaging techniques and get trained in image interpretation (PET-Scan, MRI,...)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the student will be able:
- to understand the neurobiological mechanisms, at the cellular and molecular level, of the pathologies presented in class.
- to describe clinical aspects, experimental models, and therapeutic strategies associated to a given neurological disease.
- to integrate and explain mechanisms that are common between different pathologies.
- to interpret a scientific figure, by applying the gained knowledge.
- to understand and apply concepts linked to neuroimaging (e.g. interpret images)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Students will have to prepare an exposé (slides) about a nervous system pathology, to be selected among others (see content above).

This exposé will be prepared based on scientific articles:

  • A review paper, which will help to contextualize the exposé.
  • A research paper, for which the student will detail :
  • The objectives of the study
  • The methods
  • The description and interpretation of the results
  • Application of neuroimaging : explanations and interpretation
An "example" exposé will be provided by the teachers at the beginning of the course, to provide guidelines to the students. This example exposé will be provided in ENGLISH.

Guidance sessions will be planned to ensure the proper preparation of the exposé.

The course will be evaluated on the exposé from the student (30min +/-), lectured in front of the teachers and other students.

The evaluation will be based on:

  • The exposé itself (quality of the PPT and of the scientific information, exhaustivity, understanding of the research paper)
  • A session of questions/answers focused on the exposé, and the quality of the defense.
This exposé will be out of the official exam session.

ALL STUDENTS must attend each presentation, to ask questions and favor good discussions.
