Learning unit contents

Overview: Definitions. Classification of machine tools, robots and automatic industrial production processes. Notions of PLC, GRAFCET, GEMMA. Study of the operating part of production machines. Choice of electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic drive solutions. Pneumatic and hydraulic systems. Architecture of industrial robots and main characteristics. Practical work on programmable logic controllers, pneumatic systems and robotic arms.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Fundamental knowledge in automation of industrial processes.
  • Study the behaviour of an automated system.
  • Apply automation technologies for the design of a production system.
This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.2, IV.2, IV.6, IV.8 of the MSc in mechanical engineering.

  • 3 labs on pneumatic actuation systems
  • 2 labs on PLC programming (combinatorial and sequential programming)
  • 1 lab on robot programming
