Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course addresses various specialized topics in metals engineering, among the following:

  • Solidification and forming of metals and metallic alloys.
  • Thermal and thermomecanical treatments of metals and alloys.
  • Corrosion and surface treatments of metals.
  • Metal matrix composites, including their processing methods and specific usage properties.
  • Metallic materials and hydrogen

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Understand and control the relations between the processing method and parameters, the (micro-)structure of a metallic material and its usage properties.

This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.1, I.2, II.1, II.2, III.1, III.3, IV.2, V.2, VI.2, VI.3, VII.1, VII.2, VII.3, VII.4, VII.5 of the MSc in biomedical engineering.

This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.1, I.2, II.1, II.2, III.1, III.3, IV.2, IV.5, IV.9, V.2, VI.2, VI.3, VII.1, VII.2, VII.3, VII.4, VII.5 of the MSc in mechanical engineering.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of physical metallurgy (as presented in PHYS0904 Physics of materials (Part metallic materials), or similar formation) is strongly recommended.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course comprises a series of lectures and seminars (some of them given by guest lecturers).

A visit at the "Maison de la Métallurgie" will be organized at the beginning of the course (Tuesday 15/10/24; practical details will be communicated at a later time). This visit will be the object of a report.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Teaching will take place face-to-face, for as much as the sanitary situation allows. If necessary, some learning activities may take place remotely.

Course materials and recommended or required readings

Powerpoint presentations and publications from scientific literature will be made available for the students via eCampus.

Written work / report

Further information:

  • Report of the visit to the maison de la métallurgie, for 20% of the final mark.
  • Two "homeworks", in relation with topics seen in class, each for 20% of the final mark.
  • One personal research work (short bibliographical survey on a topic chosen from a list) for 40% of the final mark.

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The first lecture will consist in a guided tour at the Maison de la Métallurgie et de l'Industrie de Liège on Tuesday October 15th, 2024, in the afternoon (according to the normal schedule of the course).

Informations regarding the organisation of the first lecture will be shared by email with the students that are regularly enrolled for the course, at the end of the week preceding the visit. Students who wish to take this course but who have not been able to validate their PAE by October, 11th, 2023, should contact Mrs Mertens (email: anne.mertens@uliege.be) to obtain these informations.
