Learning unit contents
This course intoduces to the design of the most usual machine elements. It has also an introduction to metal cuting fabrication processes.
CONTENTS
Intoduction to ISO tolerances.
Force determination in a transmission.
Preliminary design of a shaft.
Fatigue resistance and criteria.
Design of shafts
Shaft-hub assembling.
Rolling bearing computation.
Journal bearings.
Gears : spur and helical meshes. AGMA and ISO methods
Belts and puleys.
Machining technologies: turning and milling operations.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
After this course, the student will be able to dimension the most used machine elements.
- Determination of loads
- Determination of reduced forces (M, N, T etc...)
- Determination of permissible stresses
- Sizing of shafts, long and short
- Fatigue calculation
- Shaft dynamics elements
- Determination of catalog elements
This ability will be useful in the integrated project.
This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.2, III.1, III.2, IV.1, IV.2, V.2, VII.2 of the BSc in engineering.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Prerequisites: Geometry, rational mechanics, elements of strength of materials.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Oral course and exercises which are applications and solution of a desgin project.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
face-to-face course.

Additional information:
Part 1: Continuous evaluation
- The students have to solve several individual homeworks (mini projects). The assessement is based on the reports.
- Exam includes a part with questions of theory and a part of problem solving (no books)
- If applicable, attendance to the lab sessions is mandatory to get the credits
- Attendance of 60% to the supervised work sessions is mandatory to get the credits.
- To get the credits, it is necessary to obtain marks greater or equal to 7/20 in both parts. In case of failure in one of the two parts, the final mark is bound by upper value by 7/20.
