Learning unit contents
In 2024-2025, the Semiotics and Rhetoric seminar is dedicated to the study of published courses by major intellectual figures in the disciplines of language, philosophy and literature in France (courses at the Collège de France by Roland Barthes, Émile Benveniste or Michel Foucault, seminars by Gilles Deleuze, etc.).
The current editorial success of these publications deserves to be examined. The approach will be semiotic, integrating elements of discourse analysis, rhetoric, pragmatics and the study of editorial enunciation. The challenge will be to shed light on the gestures that structure these discursive practices of knowledge. The seminar will draw in particular on the recently published work of the Lttr13 collective, in Le discours de la linguistique. Gestes et imaginaires du savoir (Lyon, ENS Éditions, 2024).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this seminar, students will be able to:
- participate in contemporary research in semiotics ;
- understand the theoretical and methodological issues involved in the study of enunciative gestures in the discursive practices of knowledge ;
- carry out personal research on this theme, leading to the production of a written work.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Competence in French language is essential for an appreciation of the complexities of French discourse.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The seminar is organised in two parts:
- Q1: introductory session, program of readings and case studies presented by holders ;
- Q2: follow-up of individual work.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Active seminar. Classe attendance is mandatory.

The reference bibliography will be compiled collectively over the course of the sessions.

The assessment will be based on an individual piece of written work, in the form of a scientific article, on a freely chosen issue related to the seminar theme.
The assessment criteria are as follows
- theoretical interest and originality of the topic
- analytical finesse
- formal completion
- attendance at seminar sessions.

The seminar will be briefly introduced at the Masters presentation session on Wednesday 25/9/2024 at 9am in room A1/3/24.
