Learning unit contents
Translation from Ancient Greek and Greek prose composition. Some short chapters from Greek grammar. There might be as well exercises on grammar, restitution of missing text and overall understanding of the meaning of a text. Private reading: you can choose a text from ancient or even Byzantine Greek literature of ca. 50 pages (prose or poetry).
In view of the specific exam for MA 2 students, personal preparation is useful in addition to the translation exercises that will be proposed from Greek poetry.

Enhancing students' knowledge of Ancient Greek.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Very good knowledge of Ancient Greek language (grammar, stylistics, vocabulary and metrics).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Active participation in the exercises.
In addition, an active approach to the Greek language should make it possible to achieve greater linguistic proficiency.

A) For the first 5 ECTS (common with MA 1):
Translation into and from ancient Greek. Oral examination on the private reading.
B) For the remaining 5 ECTS (specific for MA 2):
Oral examination : translation of two excerpts from Homeric epic poetry and classical tragedy (only passages in iambic trimeters and trochaic tetrameters). During the preparation time, you can use a dictionary (like Bailly). Scansion will be part of the skills assessed.
