The course aims at providing complete beginners with the basic knowledge and skills necessary for the independent reading of Latin texts.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills
No prior knowledge of Latin is required.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
After a theoretical introduction offered by the teacher, students will be invited to participate in interactive activities, including:
- reading exercises;
- the creation of vocabulary lists ;
- exercises aimed at understanding the functioning of nominal cases, verbal morphology, case syntax, structure of the sentences;
- short versions and exercises of translation and comprehension of the text.

Further information:
The course foresees the study of the material provided during the course (texts, exercises), of a manual of Latin grammar (eg. A.-M. Boxus, M. Lavency, Clauis, Grammaire latine pour la lecture des auteurs, Nouvelle édition, avec la collaboration de D. Longrée et G. Schouppe, Louvain-la-Neuve 2014) and of a textbook for the assimilation of Latin vocabulary (eg. G. Etienne, Cahier de vocabulaire latin, 20th ed., Liège 2011).
In addition, students will be expected to use the Latin-French dictionary F. GAFFIOT, Dictionnaire latin-français, Paris, Hachette, 2000 (and re-ed.).
