Common core

This English grammar course aims to:

  • verify mastery of the grammatical units covered in Bloc 1, in the lower-level grammar course;
  • acquire and apply new grammatical skills in the context of written work.

Consolidation

This course has a B2 CEFRL level. The aim of the course is to consolidate and extend the students' vocabulary & writing skills, and the specific features of the language related to politics. Concretely, for LANG8032B students will deal with:



  • vocabulary exercises
  • writing exercises (formal argumentative essays)
  • selected articles & documents

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Common core

By the end of the year, students will have reached the B1+ / B2 level for grammar skills. 

Consolidation

The dual purpose of the course is:

  • to consolidate and extend the students' general language understanding and use
  • to develop and consolidate students' mastery of the specific features of the language related to politics
  • to introduce to academic English
This is done in the four language skills, namely speaking, listening, writing and reading.

Having passed the bloc 1 grammar course (LANG8030-A).

  • Intermediate level, B1 CEFRL level
Access to the LANG8032B-LANG8033 courses is possible if the student has validated LANG8030 and achieved a mark of at least 8/20 for LANG8031.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

  • Grammar theory and exercises, accompanied by formative tests (Wooclap / Socrative...)
  • Written production exercises.
The acquisition of complex grammatical structures is essential for articulating strong arguments in academic writing. This includes, for example, mastering logical connectors, the passive voice, and relative clauses, which are common in academic texts.

Consolidation

In addition to regular preparation work, students will have to write several essays. One of these will be taken into account and will make up 5% of the final grade of LANG8032B.

Additional information:

1h/week with writing and vocabulary exercises on themes linked to LANG8033.

Weekly preparation work is expected, the workload this represents is variable and depends on the students' level of competence.

We strongly advise students to read articles about the themes discussed in class, on their own and to practice their listening skills at home.

Continuous assessment (10%*): grammar tests and writing exercises. Any absence from one of these tests, not justified by a medical certificate, will result in a score of 0/20 for the test in question. The continuous assessment grade will be maintained in the event of an exam session in August.


Written exams in January (10%*) and May/June (10%*): open-ended and multiple-choice questions.

Additional information:

The LANG8032-1 students will have to take two exams (one written exam is held in January and deals with grammar and vocabylary while the June written exam also includes a writing exercise.

Continuous assessment of progress (class participation and tasks) accounts for 15% of the final grade of LANG8032-1. Classwork results will be taken into account for the first and second exam sessions.

Essays done during the year and the exams will be assessed according to a number of criteria including their content and internal cohesion, the accuracy of grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation, and the range of vocabulary and structure.

Consolidation

The vocabulary and writing topics seen within the context of LANG8032-1 are linked to the activities of LANG8033.

Grammar assessment is organized through :

- specific grammar questions ;
- writing exercises.

Classwork results for LANG8032-1 (= 15% of the final mark) will be taken into account for the first and second exam sessions.

Participating in the course and attending classes with a hard copy of the syllabus are vital to the learning process.

Regarding the use of language-generating artificial intelligence:
