Learning unit contents

Attendees will learn about the recent advances in immune response and vaccine against infection diseases with the example of the emerging themes such as  COVID19. The course will cover broad aspects of the disease including diagnostic testing, B and T cell immune responses, cytokine storm syndrome and vaccine development.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

On completion of the course, students should be able to :

-get a comprehensive view of the various research lines that are developed in vaccination against pathogens and cancer.


-elaborate on how the immune system could be regulated or manipulated to reach immune protection.-Describe foundational concepts in immunology and how they are linked to therapeutic strategies.


-Analyse pre-clinical studies reporting immunologic advances and appreciate their relevance for translational medicine.

With the group presentation, students will improve their skills in:
-giving a clear and comprehensive oral presentation (supported by slides)

-demonstrate that they carried out bibliographic searches and that they are able to give a clear overview of a specific research topic


-understand the rationale for specific experimental designs in immunology research


-comment the results obtained in a research publication, including data collection, presentation and interpretation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

-Theoretical lectures (2x1h30) welcoming the active participation of students.

-Flipped classroom : each group of students will be attributed a specific theme that they will teach to the other course attendees. By reviewing the recent litterature and online resources, exchanging between students and getting feedback from the teachers, the students will provide a short lecture in front of all the students.

Students will work individually and in group to prepare their lecture, they are encouraged to contact the reference teacher (emails, remote and on-site meetings). Moreover, training sessions on site will ensure the progression of the work, the clarity of their lecture ans the quality of the lecture content.
