The foundations of dental diagnosis
The theoretical concepts taught in the Dental Diagnostic Methods course include all the basic notions necessary to be able to make a simple dental diagnosis in a patient. The course begins with a first class meeting where the presentation of the profession of hygienist and the place it occupies in the dental and medical world are detailed. Then, the places and the teams are presented to you, as well as the different disciplines of dentistry. Then, the course addresses the teaching of normal dental structures: description of the structures and functions of normal dental and periodontal tissues. Some basic notions of radiodiagnosis are also covered in order to allow the student to read a basic radiographic image and to identify the non-pathological dental and periodontal structures. The various theoretical concepts related to dental nomenclature, as well as the specific terms used in everyday dental consultation language, will be discussed in detail. The main useful and necessary tools for dental diagnosis will be discussed as well as the various clinical and radiological signs allowing a basic diagnosis to be made in general dentistry, periodontology, traumatology and dentofacial orthopedics. The Dental Diagnostic Methods course is a general approach to learning oral, clinical and radiological diagnostics.

At the end of the Dental Diagnostic Methods course, you - know the different disciplines of dentistry and the specificities of each of these disciplines. - know all the basic vocabulary necessary and useful for making an oral diagnosis and for good communication between oral health professionals. - know all the basic tools (clinical and radiological) necessary for the establishment of an oral diagnosis. - know all the pathologies covered in the course, pathologies which constitute the bases of the diagnosis during a dental consultation with a general dentist or with a hygienist. - be able to identify on clinical photographs and/or X-ray images the various normal dental tissues as well as decayed tissues, a healthy or pathological periodontium, or even a major orthodontic problem. - will have acquired the basic notions to recognize different oral pathologies on the basis of a clinical examination and a radiological examination. - will have acquired the basic notions to make a simple dental diagnosis and refer the patient for therapeutic care to a general dentist or to a specialist dentist if necessary. - be able to recognize the functional etiologies of orthodontic dysmorphoses - be able to distinguish the difficulties of each case for the realization of optical scans, x-rays and hygiene with an orthodontic appliance - be able to recognize the functional etiologies of orthodontic and/or dentofacial orthopedic dysmorphoses - Be able to distinguish the difficulties of each case for the realization of dental optical scans, x-rays and teaching hygiene with orthodontic appliance - Be able to inform the patient of any orofacial functional disorders (dysfunctions) concerning him in relation to the risk of installation of orthodontic and/or dentofacial orthopedic dysmorphoses

Ex cathedra (face-to-face) course based on a theoretical and clinical approach (photographs and x-rays taken from simple clinical cases). Practical work session in person (pre-clinical) or via the ecampus platform (learning and homework to be carried out in digital format).

The certification assessment of Bases of diagnosis is part of an examination integrated with that of hygiene and asepsis, another course present in the Teaching Unit.
A single rating will be generated for these two assessments within the EU.
70% of the mark of the certifying evaluation of the EU will be generated by the addition of those obtained in the two Diagnostic Bases exams: theoretical exam (60%) + practical exam (40%).
The certification assessment of Diagnostic Bases is therefore a written exam, organized at the end of the teaching unit, together with the Hygiene and Asepsis exam. Questions of the MCQ/QRM/or/or type, pairing tests make it possible to verify knowledge and understanding of the concepts taught. Open questions (with short answers (QROC)), texts to be completed and matching tests assess understanding and the ability to apply the concepts taught.
A practical work exam will also be organized in pre-clinical, on patient simulators. This practical exam will also be integrative and organized in conjunction with the Hygiene and Asepsis exam.
Individual consultation of exam papers is possible after deliberation for individual feedback (by appointment).

There are no clinical internships planned for Q1 of Bac 1, in conjunction with the teaching of the Dental Diagnostic Methods course.
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
The foundations of dental diagnosis
The Dental Diagnostic Methods course takes place in the 1st term of B1. It is organized on Monday mornings from 8:15 a.m. to 12 p.m. The classroom remains to be determined. The Basic Dental Diagnosis Practical Work sessions will take place during the 1st term of B1, in the preclinical room located on the ground floor of the Brull Policlinics (face-to-face practical work). Practical work on computers, online via the ULIège ecampus platform, can also be organised. To present yourself in preclinical, it is necessary to have a white work outfit (trousers and blouse) and clean shoes (a pair of work shoes different from street shoes).
