Learning unit contents

The course intends to address Christianity as an object of history. An epistemological reflection on the issue will be outlined.

He will then address the question of the character Jesus and the possibilities of identifying elements of his historical figure.

The fundamental sources for the history of Christianity and its tradition will be the subject of a critical analysis and a contextualization.

Beyond Jesus, a central figure of Christianism will be addressed in his historicity: Paul of Tarsus.

Finally, the figure of Augustine and his influence on Western Christianity will be discussed.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This course developps an exclusively historical approach and perspective.

At the end of this course, the student 

- has been made aware of the specificities of the historical method when dealing with the religious fact,

- masters a series of elements of the history of Christianity that will enable it to understand it better and to deal more easily with Christian historical sources.
