Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The objective of the course is to introduce those concepts of ecology related to urban (eco)systems; to present an ecological and ecosystem-oriented vision on urban systems; to study urban centers as elements composing the landscape. The course is based on the principle that an urban zone can be considered as an introduced landscape patch and also an anthropogenic matrix. The theoretical courses are completed by individual or group exercises. Field trips (individual or guided) could be organized. The aim is to offer lectures which are conceptual and academic, and which enable the students to develop an original vision on the ecological functioning of urban landscapes based upon the concepts explained during the lectures. The contents of the course can change as a function of educational or scientific opportunities or constraints.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, student will be able to understand and use the basic concepts of (landscape) ecology related to urban (eco)systems; to understand and develop a vision on urban systems and their role in landscapes or regions; to study and understand the ecological functioning of urban landscapes.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic course of ecology.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching ex cathedra, supported by powerpoint presentations. Individual or group exercises (possibly in the field) to illustrate the concepts and calculations. Seminars to illustrate current research in urban ecology. Readings of scientific articles in english. Field trip(s). Activities may change du to scientific and educational opportunities and constraints.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Additional information:

Face-to-face lectures for the theoretical courses and for the field excursions. Individual and group exercises (self-planning). Seminar(s).

Course materials and recommended or required readings

Readings and course notes will be communicated during the lectures. Files will be provided by means of the MyULg system. A significant part will be in english.

Any session :

- In-person

oral exam

- Remote

oral exam

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person

Additional information:

Oral exam of the theoretical courses and the exercises. Assessment of the reports of the exercises. Evaluation of the individual readings. The contribution of the different parts of the course to the final evaluation will be communicated during the course.
Depending on the evolution of the covid-19 crisis, a choice will be made between a face-to-face oral examination and a remote oral examination.

Work placement(s)

None.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Presence at the theoretical courses is recommended. Every student has to understand well all aspects of the exercises, also for the group exercises. Participation in all activities of the exercices is compulsory, even for exercises in which the group work is planned by the students themselves.
The organizational arrangements, educational activities and content of this course may change as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.
