Learning unit contents

The course will propose a reflection on the notion of state in Greco-Roman antiquity and shall endeavour to underline and explain the differences between the various societies and the various political regimes in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the student will be able to report, in a flawless French and through an argumented and structured reflection, supported by relevant examples, of the functioning of political and social institutions of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

It's better to have followed the general course of History of Greco-Roman antiquity, including 15h of the Middle East history (LCLA0015-1).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Alternation of theoretical presentations and commented readings of translated sources.
