Learning unit contents

Prints from the Antwerp publishing house Aux Quatre Vents

Together with his wife Volcxken Diericx, Hieronymus Cock established one of the most successful print publishing houses in Europe in the 16th century. They published and circulated prints after masterpieces by famous Italian and Netherlandish painters. They also issued the first printed series of ancient ruins and sculptures. Some of the most talented artists of the time, such as Bruegel and Heemskerck, provided them with drawings specially designed to be translated into prints.

This fascinating production will be explored through an in-depth examination of original prints from the Wittert Museum. The course will therefore also provide an introduction to the expertise of Old Master prints.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course aims to deepen students' knowledge of the history of European Renaissance art.

This knowledge and the methodological tools of the discipline, such as heuristics and stylistic, iconographic and technical analysis, will be used to introduce students to the study of Old Master prints.
