Learning unit contents

The Research Thesis is a scientific paper based on an original research topic that is related to the teaching objective chosen by the student, and carried out according to the standards of a scientific document. The student must clearly identify a research topic and research questions, collect and process relevant information using an appropriate method, and finally provide personal answers to the questions.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The skills that are developed and evaluated by the Master Thesis are :
Strategy: establishing a strategy to optimize the value chain of a company, organization or project.
Implementation: implementing the daily management of a company, organization or project.
Quality and performance control: planning and implementing performance and quality control in a company, organization or project.
Communication: communicating effectively about your company, organization or project, both internally and externally.
Adaptability: adapting one's managerial practices to the needs of a constantly changing world.
A sixth skill, didactics, is added for the Master's degree with a teaching orientation.
As the Thesis is an individual test at the end of the Master's program, the five skills will be evaluated during the defense.

Course materials and recommended or required readings

Detailed rules, agenda and much more on http://mythin.hec.ulg.ac.be.

In addition to being original and wide-ranging, the topic of the Research Thesis must be related to the teaching objective chosen by the student.
It must be validated by the Master Thesis supervisor, the concentration leader and the Master Thesis Committee.
The student must write a Master Thesis and defend it orally before a jury. The presentation is in English.
The Master Thesis jury is composed of a Research Thesis supervisor (a member of the teaching staff) and two readers (members of the teaching staff or external specialists). The final evaluation grid completed by the jury is visible to the student after the Master's deliberation.
The complete regulations are available on http://mythin.hec.ulg.ac.be.

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

During the second quarter of Block 1 of the Master, the student chooses his/her Research Thesis topic.  This choice can be made in 2 ways :
- Either the student proposes himself/herself a topic that he/she will have already validated with his or her future supervisor;
- Or the student chooses, when possible, a topic in the "Research Thesis" portfolio constituted by specialization and obtains the supervisor's agreement.
Master Thesis topics are subject to the agreement of the concentration leader and of the Master Thesis Committee constituted within the School. The Master Thesis Committee meets at the beginning of May and of September to determine the composition of the jury.
Any student who has not submitted a Master Thesis subject validated by a supervisor and a concentration leader before the Committee meeting will not be assigned a jury and will therefore be unable to defend his/her Master Thesis the following academic year (in accordance with article 40-1 of the regulations for studies and examinations).
