Learning unit contents

Students enrolled in the final year of the specialized master's program carry out an internship in a company. This may be carried out within a private company (commercial, financial or industrial), a parastatal organization or an international organization.
The internship takes place in Belgium or abroad. It is ideally carried out in a language other than French for students who have not had an international stay.
It aims to familiarize the student with the life and management of a company and to enable him/her to confront the academic knowledge acquired with professional practices.
During their internship, students carry out a clearly defined mission. This consists in dealing with a specific management problem, analyzing it and formulating recommendations.
The internship mission must be related to the specialization chosen by the student as part of his or her Master's program.
Internship students are supervised :

  • by a "mentor", who is responsible for their internship in the host company and who is named in the internship agreement ;
  • by an internship supervisor, who is a member of the teaching staff (academic or scientific) and who is appointed by the concentration leader chosen by the student.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The skills that are developed and evaluated by the internship are :
Strategy: establishing a strategy to optimize the value chain of a company, organization or project.
Implementation: implementing the daily management of a company, organization or project.
Quality and performance control: planning and implementing performance and quality control in a company, organization or project.
Communication: communicating effectively about your company, organization or project, both internally and externally.
Adaptability: adapting one's managerial practices to the needs of a constantly changing world.
As the internship is an individual test at the end of the Master's program, the five skills will be evaluated during the defense.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The internship must extend over minimum 10 weeks of full-time activity.
The internship takes place in the 2nd quarter of the academic year.

Detailed rules, agenda and much more on
http://mythin.hec.ulg.ac.be.

The internship is evaluated on the basis of :

  • the student's behavior towards the school and the staff;
  • his/her performance in the company;
  • the written report (written in French or English);
  • the oral defense (in French or English).
The completion of the internship itself, the submission of the written report and the oral defense must take place during the same academic year.

The jury is made up of the internship supervisor. The company mentor is invited to attend the oral defense. On the day of the submission of his/her written report, the student may, if he/she wishes, request the presence of a moderator from the Internship Officer, provided that he/she motivates his/her request in writing. The company mentor is invited to attend the oral defense.
The student completes a self-assessment grid on http://mythin.hec.ulg.ac.be.
The company mentor completes an evaluation grid on http://mythin.hec.ulg.ac.be.
The final evaluation grid completed by the jury is visible to the student after the Master's deliberation.
The complete regulations are available on http://mythin.hec.ulg.ac.be.

Work placement(s)

The student has to do his/her own search for an internship. The School does not commit itself to doing so for him/her.
However, the Internship Office provides advice and guidance by making available a regularly updated "Portfolio of internship proposals".

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The student starts searching for an internship from the second quarter of the Master Block 1 and defines the mission of the internship. He/she encodes his/her internship mission on MyThIn no later than during the first quarter of the Master Block 2.
The mission topic is subject to the agreement of the concentration leader. Once the mission has been approved,  an internship supervisor is assigned to him/her by mutual agreement with the concentration leader.
The internship agreement is then validated and signed by the Director of Studies.
