Learning unit contents
The course is a survey of English literature from its Anglo-Saxon origins to the end of the sixteenth century.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Show students how and why literary genres and movements appeared and developed in English literature, from its Anglo-Saxon origins to the sixteenth century, in connection with the historical situation (social, economic and philosophical context); encourage them to become familiar with the idioms specific to literary criticism and literary history.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Understand English.

Face to face, if at all possible. Students are encouraged to ask questions.

The course is based on a syllabus which will be made available at the beginning of the term. Recommended further reading: David McDowell, An Illustrated History of Britain (Longman, 1989); Martin Gray, A Dictionary of Literary Terms (York Handbooks, 1992); Robert Barnard, A Short History of English Literature (Blackwell, 1995).
