Learning unit contents

An introduction to the history and current situation of some of the former British colonies. After a general introduction to the notion of postcolonialism, the course will be devoted to a number of countries/areas that have undergone different types of colonization, decolonization and neo-colonization. In addition to political issues, cultural aspects (including literary ones) will also be studied.
   

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of this course students will be able to engage in a critical discussion of issues related to former British colonies, to identify mechanisms of subordination and processes of resistance and emancipation, and to distinguish between various cultures in our globalized world.

Additional information:

The final grade will be based on a short essay. In preparation for their end-of-term short essays, students will also give a short presentation on a topic of their own choosing and write 3 blog posts.
