Learning unit contents

Stresses in soils, constitutive laws for satured, unsatured and dry soils.
Experimental determination of soil geomechanical parameters using in situ and laboratory test.
Design, calculation and technology of: foundations, settlement, retaining structures, compaction, slopes, earth dams and conduits.
Design a foundations for bearing capacity and settlement
Design soil retaining structures (walls, sheet piles, bracing)
Verify stability and safety of natural and manmade slopes

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Understanding of the main principles and fundamental laws of soil mechanics. Capacity for the choice and the interpretation of the physical and mechanical testing. Design of foundations, retaining structures, slopes.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- Chose a geotechnical testing campaign
- Interpret the main field and laboratory tests
- Understand the principles of the main constitutive laws for soils
- Calculate stress distribution under applied loads
- Design a foundations for bearing capacity and settlement
- Design soil retaining structures
- Verify stability and safety of natural and manmade slopes

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Theory will be teatched face to face. Exercices will be done to apply therory. Additional exercices will be available on eCampus.

Oral examination for theory and written exam for exercices. Each part account 50% in the final note. No dispense possible for reported session in September.
