Learning unit contents
This course contains 4 chapters:
1. Definitions
2. The color of minerals
3. Identification methods in gemology (simple methods + XRF)
4. Description of gem minerals and their occurrences
5. Treated and synthetic gems
6. Advanced analysis techniques (Raman, LA-ICP-MS, GEMTOF)
7. Inclusions in gems
8. Case studies (medieval reliquaries)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The aim of this course, is to teach to future geologists the basics of gemology.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The basics of Mineralogy have to be known (levels BAC1, BAC2 and BAC3).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Practicals of gemmology (use of refractometer, measurement of density, ...).
Visits of museums (Curtius, Treasure of the Cathedral).
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
