Learning unit contents
In this course, students will delve into the theoretical and practical aspects of observation theory. Students will gain a deep understanding of estimation theory and its practical application in topography. Through a hands-on approach using Python programming, students will learn how to solve estimation theory exercises, with a primary focus on the theory of errors and the application of least squares methodology.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Understand the fundamental principles of observation theory.
- Apply estimation theory concepts to solve real-world problems in topography.
- Proficiently use Python for data analysis and problem-solving.
- Implement the theory of errors and least squares methodology in practical scenarios.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
- Basic knowledge of mathematics and statistics is recommended.
- Familiarity with Python programming is helpful but not mandatory.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Practical work are organized. During these sessions, practical problems (mainly in topography) will be solved using theory of errors and least squares.

The evaluation consists in a written exam on:
- the material seen during the theoretical lectures;
- practical problems (similar to the one solved during practical work sessions) to be solved using the theory of errors and least squares.
A brief oral discussion about the written exam is also organized.
