Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
This course (taught in English) focuses on design and construction of multipurpose hydraulic structures (hydroelectricity, floods and drought management, water supply...) and to associated structures such as spillways, outlets, hydropower plants, transport and distribution networks. Management aspects of these structures are also highlighted.
- Fixed dams and associated structures (spillways, water intakes (including desilting structures), regulation structures and outlets...)
- Hydropower plants
- Transport, distribution and wastewater collection networks, including storage structures
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
After this course, the student will be able:
- to understand and apply the basic knowledge of design and management of multi-purpose hydraulic schemes
- to contribute to the design of reservoirs, water supply and drainage networks (including storm tanks)
This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.1, I.2, III.1, III.2, III.3, III.4, IV.1, IV.2, IV.3, IV.4, IV.5, V.1, V.2, VI.1, VI.2, VI.3, VI.4, VII.1, VII.2, VII.3, VII.4, VII.5, VII.6 of the MSc in civil engineering.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The course relies on fundamentals of solid, structure and soil mechanics as well as of hydraulics given in the framework of the education of civil engineers in constructions.
The lecture " Constructions hydrauliques I" (1st master) Conception et exécution des constructions hydrauliques en rivière - GCIV0009-1 is a prerequisite :
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is based on lectures and practical works, possibly in group, in class or in laboratory.
Field visits are schedule to illustrate the notions given during lectures.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face lectures.
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Slides used during the lectures are made available for the student on eCampus.
The teacher also recommends the reading of complementary material.
Facultative readings:
- Constructions hydrauliques, Hager W.H. et Schleiss A. J., Presses polytechniques Universitaires Romandes : Lausanne
- Hydraulic Structures, Novak P., Moffat A.I.B., Nalluri C., Narayanan R., Taylor & Francis : London
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( open-ended questions ) AND oral exam
Written work / report
Additional information:
The reports of practical work/exercises are evaluated and/or presented orally. A written exam is organized at the end of the lecture during January session.
The final note is obtained by ponderation of the partial notes (practical works, project, exam).
The assignements are compulsory. Students who fail to submit the report of an assignement before the announced deadline will not be allowed to take the exam.
Work placement(s)
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
The course is given in English.
Lectures take place on Friday morning during the first semester (8 weeks). The student must be present for the practical exercises.
Depending on the evolution of sanitary rules related to coronavirus and the resulting constraints on teaching activities, lectures might be given using videos posted on e-campus.
Main change: Feedback to students on projects will be more systematic.
