Learning unit contents

Basic concepts

The objective of this course is to provide the students with fondamental knowledges allowing designing building structures. In particular, the following concepts will be addressed:



  • Functional requirements such as acoustic performance, fire safety, ...
  • Basic building elements (roofing, flooring, wall, joints, foundations, facade ...)
  • Construciton techniques
  • Building types (single-storey buildings, multi-storey, high-rise ...)
  • Lowering of loads
  • ...

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Basic concepts

At the end of this course, the students will be able to:




  • Perform a lowering of loads
  • Conceive the structural scheme of a building construction;
  • Select the most appropriate building elements;
  • Establish the plans, including sections and details.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic concepts

Prerequesites:

Basic knowledge in the field of structural engineering is required, in particular in the design and analysis of civil engineering structures.

Corequesites:

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Basic concepts

Frontal lectures.

Some lectures will be seminars with lecturers from outside the University (practitionners from industry).

Selected concepts discussed in the course will be applied in exercices and homeworks.

Site visits could be organised.

The submission of the homeworks and the presence of the students at the seminars and at the site visits are mandatory.

Additional information:

Closed-book written exam.

The homeworks will be marked and ccount for in the final mark of the course. The relative weight of marks of the written exam and homeworks will be fixed at the beginning of the course. 

A student who has not participated to all the mandatory activities will not be allowed to present the examination. A mark "A" will be attributed in this case (except if a specific justification is provided and accepted by the professors which will analyse the justificiation with equity).
