Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Basic concepts
The objective of this course is to provide the students with fondamental knowledges allowing designing building structures. In particular, the following concepts will be addressed:
- Basic building elements (roofing, flooring, wall, joints, foundations, facade ...)
- Construciton techniques
- Building types (single-storey buildings, multi-storey, high-rise ...)
- Link between the choice of structural elements and loads
- Transfer of loads from the point of application to the ground
- ...
Advanced concepts + Project
In this part of the course, the design and the execusion aof specific elements will be covered in the form of theoretical lectures and worked examples.
In addition, a project (in group) consisting in conceiving and designing a building structure, based on a detailed load lowering, will have to be realised.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Basic concepts
At the end of this course, the students will be able to:
- Conceive the structural scheme of a building;
- Select the most appropriate building elements;
- Establish the plans, including sections and details.
This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.1, I.2, II.1, III.1, III.2, III.3, III.4, IV.3, IV.5, V.1, V.2, VII.6 of the program available here.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Basic concepts
Frontal lectures.
Some lectures will be seminars with lecturers from outside the University (practitionners from industry).
Selected concepts discussed in the course will be applied in a project to be realised at home.
Site visits could be organised.
The submission of the project and the presence of the students at the seminars and at the site visits are mandatory.
Advanced concepts + Project
Face-to-face lectures and a project to be carried out mainly at home. Question and answer sessions will be organised during the realisation of the project.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Closed-book written exam.
The project will be marked and ccount for in the final mark of the course. The relative weight of marks of the written exam and project will be fixed at the beginning of the course.
A student who has not participated in all the mandatory activities will not be allowed to present the examination. A mark "A" will be attributed in this case (except if a specific justification is provided and accepted by the professors which will analyse the justificiation with equity).
