Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This unit covers the following topics: basic logic functions using Boolean algebra, combinational circuits (design and simplification, implementation with programmable circuits and functional blocks), synchronous sequential circuits (flip flops, state-machines, registers, counters, implementation with programmable circuits), technology parameters and timing issues, memories, programmable logic devices.

The VHDL language is studied and applied in the group project.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students will have learned about the fundamentals regarding the design of digital combinational and sequential circuits.  They will also have acquired a working knowledge of VHDL through the group project.

This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.1, I.2, II.1, III.1, III.2, IV.1, VI.1, VI.2, VII.2, VII.4, VII.5 of the BSc in engineering.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures, tutorials, laboratories and a group project (implementation of a digital design on a CPLD using VHDL).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

Written work / report

Other : Presentation of the project

Further information:

The examination will consist of a series of multiple choice questions and/or questions requiring a short written answer, and will cover the theory and tutorial content. The specific exam format will be discussed during the last lecture.  A formula sheet will be appended to the exam booklet: basic non-programmable calculators will be allowed during the examination.

The group project will be evaluated by means of a written report and a live demonstration.

Marking:

  • 40% group project.
  • 60% exam (30% theory - 30% exercises).

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

There will be no deferred assessment for the project (i.e. the project must be completed during the first session).

Notice to international students: no remote exams will be organized.

We encourage constructive feedback to improve our courses and your learning experience.  You can provide feedback through the Evalens platform, your student representative (who will present it at the "Conseil des études"), or by contacting the lecturer and teaching assistants directly via email or in person.  Please note, however, that any defamatory, vulgar, aggressive and offensive comments on the Evalens platform will be reported to the appropriate authorities.
