Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The Roman law lectures (special questions) will change subject from year to year.
In 2024-2025, the topic will be the legal status of women in Ancient Rome.
The course is organised as a 'flipped class', which means that the students - in groups of 2 - present part of the material to their fellow students.
Given the subject matter, particular attention will be paid to the critical analysis of past and present legal rules from a gender perspective.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This course aims to study a legal topic in Roman Law and to compare with the modern situation.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
It is very useful to have attended a Roman law course before attending this course.
In order to help the students, a MOOC of introduction to Roman law is at their disposal.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is given in the form of a 'flipped classroom'. This means that the students will present part of the material in pairs.
The allocation of groups and topics to be presented will be made during the first two sessions.
The presentation sessions are organised during the spring (or Easter) holidays. It is compulsory for all students to attend these (usually two) presentation days.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Further information:
Lectures will take place during the second semester in presence of the students.
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Further information:
A short syllabus covering the central points of the subject and certain texts by Roman jurists of particular relevance to the subject (and therefore also to the preparation of presentations) will be sent to students at the beginning of the course. The text in question is "La condition juridique de la femme à Rome", by Roger Vigneron and Jean-François Gerkens.
The quality of the presentations will be decisive for the final mark. An oral examination on all the topics covered in the presentations will allow for adjustments during the examination session.
