Learning unit contents
The course will address documentary film history from the 1920's to the present and will introduce the students to the technical, aesthetical and political aspects of documentary filmmaking. How to film "reality"? What are the different types of documentary films? How to represent the "other"? To what extend does a documentary film refer to the social and political context of its time? What are the basic ingredients that foster the reading of a film in a "documentary perspective" (Odin)?
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The students will acquire basic knowledge on documentary film history and develop analytical skills (historical and sociocritical) in the field of documentary cinema.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Passive knowledge of English (reading).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course will be based on the watching and the analysis of documentary films. The analysis will be developped in class in collaboration with the sudents. Each session will end with a q&a on the texts (see "required readings").
