Learning unit contents

This course is taught in French and tailored to the needs of first-time students enrolling in the first year of the bachelor's degree in chemical sciences at ULiege.

Its aim is to help them make the transition from high school to university:

  • by discussing relevant learning strategies in chemistry,
  • sustaining their motivation through a range of presentations about topical fields and careers in chemistry.
This course is not suitable for students enrolled in other degrees or for Erasmus students.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This course runs in parallel with the 3 main courses of the first quadrimester (General Chemistry, General Physics I and General Mathematics I).

It has been designed to represent a moderate workload, concentrated almost exclusively within the 20-hour program. Attendance at these courses and activities is compulsory.

By participating in these courses and activities, students should be able to approach more effectively their learning in the other courses of the curriculum and begin to build a global, cross-disciplinary vision of the role of chemistry and chemists.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic chemistry, such as covered in Belgian secondary schools

This course is taught in French.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

This course is taught in French.

Mainly during the first two weeks : classes and activities about key points when learning chemistry: "Do you speak chemdspeak?", "A brief history of chemistry", "Maths in chemistry", etc.
Throughout the quadrimester : presentations on topical cross-disciplinary themes, a session devoted to soft skills in the professional life of chemists ; short presentations about 12 areas of chemistry.

Please note that this course is targeted at students enroling for the first time in the 1st year of the Bacheor's degree in chemical sciences. This course is not suitable for students enrolled in other degrees or for Erasmus students.
