Learning unit contents

The internship is a substantial individual project that needs to be realised by immersion in an industrial environment, in Belgium or abroad. it is generally considered to be the equivalent of 2 months full-time work.  The subject is typically proposed by a company and approved by a promotor, who is a member of the academic or permanent scientific staff.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The goal of the internship is to prepare the students for the industrial world by exposing them to a professional environment focusing on specific technologies. The students must show their ability to realise a substantial amount of work, using their knowledge and aptitude, both theoretical and practical.  The work will be composed of a preliminary study, a subsequent realisation and an evaluation.

This course contributes to the learning outcomes V.1&2, VI.1, VII.2&3 of the MSc in biomedical engineering.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Additional information:

The evaluation is based on the report provided by the student.  There are no formal guidelines on the length of the report, however, it is expected that around 30 pages are required to address the following elements: a description of the context, the compnay, the problem (or design specifications), the methodology, the executed tasks, the obtained results and a conclusion (contributions and perspectives).  Is it necessary to provide sufficient quantitiative information on the developed programs or practical realisations. The defense of the internship is oral and public. It consists of an oral presentation, a Q&A and is followed by a deliberation.  The final score takes into account the amount and quality of the executed work, the quality of the written report and oral presentation, the relevance of the answers to the questions, as well as the advise from the industrial sponsor.

Remark that if the interhip and TFE are performed on the same subject, the immersion internship can only be valorised for 3 ECTS instead of 8 ECTS (via the observation internship course code).

Work placement(s)

Professors propose internship subjects for which they accept the academic promotorship.  These subjects are coming from the companies. Students can also propose a subject themselves.  The students should decide as early as possible on the subject, ideally the end of the preceding academic year if they want to perform the internship during the summer holidays. The internship will last for at least 40 working days, without taking into account the time to write or defend the report. The internship can start as soon as the students is registered in the program, e.g. during the summer holidays.  The internship is organised comform to the terms of an internship convention signed by the 2 parties involved.
